Tonight we have four rearranged games from the Irish Cup that were postponed a week ago. The game to keep an eye on is a Mid- Ulster derby at Mourneview between Glenavon and Dungannon.
Ballymena Utd Vs Portadown
An interesting tie comes at Ballymena Showgrounds. The Sky Blues host Matthew Tipton’s Portadown side who are pushing for promotion back to the Premiership. DJ’s men are keeping the heat on Linfield in Danske Bank Premiership and are also in the League Cup Final. Ballymena eased past Dundela in the last round and I fancy them to get through again with no problems.
Portadown are currently in third position in the Championship table and are pushing all the way for a return to top flight football. The three time winners of this competition have a very tough draw here travelling to the Showgrounds. Tipton will being doing all he can to fire his side up to try and provide a massive shock and book a place in the Quarter Finals.
Score Prediction: 3-0
Warrenpoint Vs Queen’s University
Queens face an away trip to Co. Down this evening to face Warrenpoint Town. The Point suffered a dissapointing defeat at the weekend losing 0-5 to Glentoran. However, it is important for Stephen McDonnell’s side to keep picking up points from teams around them to keep pulling clear of the relegation play-off. This one is a very winnable fixture for the Town and they will be eyeing up a Quarter Final spot.
Like The Point Queen’s themselves are in very good form. They sit top of the Bluefin Sport Premier Intermediate League. The Belfast side have only lost one league game this season and have been very impressive this far. Last years Intermediate Cup winners will be gunning for a shock result to set up a tie with one of the Irish League giants.
Score Prediction: 3-1
Glenavon Vs Dungannon
Just a Mid-Ulster derby at Mourneview Park tonight as Glenavon host Dungannon. In recent years the Lurgan Blues have enjoyed success in the Irish Cup winning it twice in the past five years. Gary Hamilton’s sides league form has taken a dip with only two wins in their last eleven games. That being said this is a competition they seem to favour.
Dungannon have really turned the corner and are starting to impress under boss Kris Lindsay. Today they confirmed the loan signing of Michael Carvill until the end of the season. This is a great bit of business for the club, Carvill a player with a huge Irish League pedigree who has enjoyed success throughout his career. The last time the Swifts got to the final they suffered heartbreak when they were defeated on penalties by Linfield. A game that Kris’s team is very capable of wining here!
Score Prediction: 1-1 (Dungannon AET)
Ballinamallard Vs Carrick
An all Championship affair in this sixth round tie at Ferney Park. The Mallards suffered a heavy defeat on Saturday at the hands of Dundela. They made the top half split but defeat at the weekend means promotion is now out of sight. A victory in this tie could inject some extra belief into the Fermanagh side.
Carrick remain promotion candidates. They now occupy second spot after the weekend and are finishing strong as the race for second spot heats up between them and Portadown. Rangers have managed to win the Irish Cup on one occasion back in 1976 when they defeated Linfield 2-1 in the final. A tough game to call in Fermanagh this evening, I am going for an away win!
Score Prediction: 1-3
